Turkey Open created with the Olympics in the hindsight
Turkish golf has got a major boost as the European Tour announced that from now onwards, Turkish Open will be taking place for at least three years.
Turkish Golf Open will be held from 7th to 10th November, 2013.
This is a major boost for the 2020 Olympic bid as well, as they will be hosting a very high profile golf tournament. Golf will be included as an official sport in the Olympic Games from the 2016, at Rio Olympics.
If Turkey succeeds in its bid for 2020 Olympics, then this announcement of Turkish Open will have a major part to play in it.
The seven million dollar event will take place at Montgomerie Course in Belek and it will be limited to 78 players, which makes this competition more interesting and competitive.
"I am honoured to announce that starting from 7th November next year the first European Tour PGA event will take place in Turkey for three years up to and including 2015," said Ahmet Agaoglu, President of the Turkish Golf Federation.
Keith Waters, Director of International Policy with the European Tour said, "We wanted to create a stronger finish to the European Tour season and we will have that now with the BMW Masters, the HSBC Champions and now the new Turkish Open as the last events
before the Dubai World Championship”.
International Sports Management is tasked to run this tournament alongside the Turkish federation.
"It's a great move for Turkey because about four years ago the PGA Tour drummed it into our heads that we should be developing golf in new nations and get golf in the Olympics," said Chandler, who heads the International Sports Management.
For long, Turkey has been striving for global recognition. This tournament will not only boost their Olympic hopes, but it will also attract many different people from many different parts of the world.
The International Olympics Committee now knows that Turkey will be holding a very high profile golf tournament. So hosting this sport will not be an issue for them, as they already have the infrastructure for it.
This tournament will also boost the scope of sports in the country itself. When Turks will see so many big names in their country, they will automatically take up this sport.
