Turkey defeated at home by Poland – 2011 CEV Girls Youth European Championship
Turkish city Ankara is the host of final round matches of the 2011 CEV Girls’ Youth European Championship.
Turkey is one of the 12 teams, which clawed their way to the final round. Turks pulled off success in their first match against Czech Republic on Saturday, April 30 and created a chance of celebration for the local fans.
However, the Turkish team fell victim to Poland’s striking game on Sunday and lost the second match. Poland claimed better status by polling 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 25-27 and 25-22). The match was played in a totally packed arena, the Baskent sports hall in TVF
Sports Complex.
The Turkish team had a competitive edge of playing under familiar conditions but the Poles did not take any pressure in the game. They covered every inch of their half and pushed the hosts behind the attack line. Turkey had to play defensively as the guests
came up with a strong attack in the early few minutes. They jumped on every little opportunity and built a lead of 8-5.
Turks remained at the same score, while Polish girls took the score to 12. The consecutive points really helped Poland to drag Turks under pressure. The hosts tried to gain stability but Poles kept an upper hand on them. The scoreboard showed 25-22, while
Poland was the winner.
The spectacular show of volleyball in the opening set provided a solid base for Poland to make further progress. The charged-up Polish players exhibited a great performance in the following set and maintained their dominance.
In the meanwhile, the home crowd backed its team. They raised encouraging slogans and enticed them to overcome the power of Poles. The captain of Turkish side, Iga Chojnacka responded to the uproar of fans and hit some nice shots.
However, Poland was ahead of Turkey and showed a firm attitude to capture the second set as well. Turks continued with their attempts and tried different ways to gain better status. Nonetheless, it seemed as if they were out of luck. The mentor of home team,
Marco Aurelio Motta kept pushing his players for better performance. The Turkish team played with best of their skills but could not succeed. Poland denied all their efforts and closed off with the same score of 25-22 in the second set.
Turks were deep down in trouble after losing two sets in a row. Clouds of uncertainty started hovering on them. On the other hand, Polish team attained the perfect tone to obtain more success. They opened third set in their usual style and added quick points.
The Poles were determined to put an end to the game in third set.
However, the home team had a little spark left in them. The head coach Motta’s team came from back row attack after the second technical break and created a bit of excitement for the local audience. Turks managed to poke the ball in right area and chased
the score.
In the ending moments of the third set, the hosts got a perfect kill and scored their first set win of the match. Poland dropped third set with a narrow gap of two points (25-27).
The success in the third set created hope for the home squad. Turkish team opened the next set with great enthusiasm. The girls of Motta built an early lead of 6-2.
Meanwhile, the Polish team reacted and tied the game at 6-all. Turks lagged behind with a difference of one-point at the first technical timeout. Afterwards, the long rallies were exchanged and hosts once again took lead. The game progressed and scored was
tied at 20-all and then at 22-all. After many ups and downs, eventually victory graced Poland as they put up a score of 25-22.
