Turkey defeats Japan 3-1 to move to final round of Women World Grand Prix – Volleyball news
Turkey and Japan found themselves competing with each other in Pool I of the Women’s FIVB World Grand Prix on Saturday, June 23, 2012. The match was being held in Osaka, Japan. It took four sets for Turkey to secure a win over the home team and earn a ticket
into the final round of the championship.
The score board showed the following final set scores: 23-25, 25-14, 25-21 and 25-17.
The win has enabled the Turkish squad to enter into the finals of the World Grand Prix for the first time in their program history.
The coach of the Turkish squad, Motta Marco Aurelio, expressed his joy at the win by giving the following comments, “Like my captain said we are very happy, as this is our first time to qualify for the finals. It’s our eight match in this World Grand Prix,
and we won seven matches, losing only against Cuba...Our performance today was good, and I’m very happy for that.”
On the other hand, the coach of the home side, Masayosi Manabe, gave the following statements, “We need to make sure we have a good reception. From Olympic qualification matches I knew we had to address serve reception in order to prepare for the Olympics.
So that’s the first thing. But we also need less mistakes and quick volleys.”
Despite the fact that her side lost the match, the Japanese player Mizuho Ishida was able to score the highest number of points in the match by tallying 21. On the other hand, the top Turkish scorer was Neslihan Darnel as she added 16 points to her side
of the score board.
The opening set started with a Turkish lead at 7-4 but the Japanese gradually overtook their opponents and got the advantage at 9-8. Turkey did not sit idle and made the set reach a tie at 15-15 before taking a lead at 23-21. However, it was the home team
that was able to bag the first set at 25-23.
The Turkish came out strong in the second set and stormed ahead with a 9-2 lead. Japan was able to close in the gap but Turkey did not let the home team overtake them and managed to stretch the advantage till 19-11. Turkey ended the set on their terms at
25-14.
The third set got to a tie at 9-9 but Turkey was leading by 16-13 at the coming of the second technical time out. Japan came up close at 22-21 but Turkey propelled themselves forward for a third set win at 25-21.
