Turkey makes clean sweep over Germany in second round of FIVB Girls' Youth World Championship
Spurred on by the 3000 supporters packed at the Baskent Sports Hall, the Turkish home team was able to make a clean sweep over Germany on August 16. The match between the two teams was part of the second round of the FIVB Girls' Youth World Championship
that is currently taking place in Ankara, Turkey. Both the teams are part of the Pool E in the tournament.
The first frame of the match was dominated by the Turkish as the Germans were trying hard to get used to the pressure of playing in the home ground of their opponents. After losing the first set, the Germans were able to step up their game in the second
frame but the effort was not enough to overcome Turkey. Capitalising on the momentum built by winning the first two sets, the Turkish were able to smother the Germans in the third, winning the match at the following final set scores: 25-13, 25-20 and 25-13.
The Turkish coach, Sahin Catma, expressed himself in the following manner after his team had won the match: “Germany is a very strong team. That’s why I’m very happy about tonight’s result. We played very well, and served on a very high level.”
Whereas the German coach Jens Tietbohl gave these statements: “Congratulations to Turkey, they played on a very high level tonight. They were much better in serving and passing.”
The Turkish side was able to start the opening set of the game in a strong fashion and got themselves the lead at 16-9 when the second technical time out was reached. The Germans kept on the chase but they could not get close enough to provide a challenge
to the Turkish. Turley was able to sail smoothly towards a set finish at 25-13.
The second set of the game saw both the teams put on an impressive display of volleyball skill and the Germans found themselves leading at 11-7. The coach of the Turkish side decided to call for a time out at this point to stop the building momentum of the
Germans. The strategy worked as the two teams came back on to the courts and Turkey was seen to play with its former force once again that led them to win the second set at 25-20.
Soaring high on the confidence generated by winning the second set in a commendable manner, the Turkish started the third set undaunted and were able to gain dominance easily. The German team could not stop the Turkish players from heading towards a speedy
win at 25-13.
The overall record of the Turkish team in the tournament now shows four victories while undergoing no loss at all.
