Turkey outclass Argentina in the 3rd Quarterfinal of 2012 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women
On Friday night, in the third quarterfinal of the 2012 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women, hosts Turkey eased their way to a 72-58 win over Argentina.
The Turks were led by their centre Nevriye Yilmaz, who recorded a game high 17 points on a 8 of 12 shooting from the floor including a triple pointer.
Kuanitra Hollingsworth followed with 12 points and 8 rebounds, Tugba Palazoglu had 13 points, while Birsal Vardarli ended the night with 8 points, a game high 11 assists and 6 rebounds for the hosts, who never trailed in the game.
Turkey were simply sensational from the field. They converted 50 percent of their two points shots, were 7 of 15 from the three point range and 11 of 17 from the foul line.
The Argentineans on the other hand were a mere 40.6 percent from the deuce range and less than 30 percent from downtown. They were paced by the two point guards – Melisa Gretter and Marina Cava.
Gretter ended the game with 17 points while Cava had 12 points on a 5 of 7 shooting. The South Americans managed only7 assists in the game and really never recovered after a poor start to the game.
The Turks stormed into the game with an 11 point unanswered burst, which finally came to an end when Gretter pulled off a 3 point play for the Argentines. The one way traffic however continued and the Turkish lead grew to 14-5
before Gretter connected on a three pointer to make 14-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Argentina scored the first four points in the second quarter to make it a two point game, but what followed was a 19-0 spurt that knocked the wind out of the Argentinean camp. The blowout run was capped by a two pointer from Yilmaz
and took the host’s advantage to 33-12.
Turkey went into the break with a 35-15 lead and Vardarli three quickly made it 38-15 at the start of the second half. The hosts maintained their dominance and were leading by 44-20 heading into the last seven minutes of the third
frame. They kept on leading handsomely and despite five straight points to end the period, the Argentineans trailed by 55-40 after three.
The Argentineans desperate to make something happen in the favour, started the last 10 minutes with a 10-2 run to make it a seven point game, 57-50. The Turks however bounced back and outscored their opponents 15-8 rest of the
way through to seal a spot in the 2012 London Olympics.
Argentina now have a task ahead and in a bid to qualify, they have to win two consecutive games.
