Turkey snaps two-match winning streak of Dutch team – Volleyball news
Taking full advantage of the familiar conditions, Turkish men’s national volleyball team pulled off success in a 2012 CEV European League match on Sunday.
The Burhan Felek competition hall in Istanbul hosted the match, which brought Netherlands in competition with Turkey. The home squad totally dominated the visiting team and ended with 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-21) victory. Turks did a fantastic job and snapped
two-match winning streak of Netherlands. The Dutch team bagged victories against Romania and Austria in previous two matches. However, Turkey proved to be detractor for them in the third match and sent the team to first loss in the 2nd leg.
Clad in No. 15 shirt Emre BATUR played an instrumental role in Turkey’s success. He added match-high 15 points, while Coskun and Subasi followed him up with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Netherlands was supported by Van Garderen, who scored 10 points and emerged as only Dutch player with double scores.
Turks controlled the action from the very start of the match. They took a 4-point lead at the first technical timeout in the opening frame (8-4). BATUR served with power and also attacked from different angles, which helped the team to stay ahead in the
game. The guest team trailed behind and made quite a few attempts to catch up with hosts.
However, Turks continued with success and doubled the gap of points at the next technical break (16-8). Home team kept the pressure on the opposite side up till the end of first set. Finally, the opening stanza concluded at 25-15 and Turkey went on front
with 1-0 record.
After dropping the first set, Dutch team responded in an aggressive tone. They regrouped in the second set and showed great variety in attack. The strong offence enabled them to come closer to Turkey on the scoreboard but it was not easy to down Turks after
their first-set win. The Netherlands lagged behind with only narrow margin at the FTT (7-8). The situation remained unchanged at the next break and both teams had the similar one-point different (15-16). Despite an utmost resistance from the opponents, Turks
managed to finish the second set with 2-point lead at 25-23.
The loss of second set put the scare of defeat on Dutch side, while Turks enjoyed a great rhythm and tone. Eventually, the hosts cruised past to 25-21 win in the final set and declared match victory.
According to the set formula of the competition, Czech Republic will serve as host to the third leg of the tournament. The next set of matches will be kicked off on Friday, while the City Hall Jablonec Nad in Nisou, Czech Republic will set up the field of
play. Turkey will take on Romania in the first match whereas the Netherlands will skip the third week matches.
