Turkey sweeps Argentina in FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship match - Volleyball
A Pool E match took place between Turkey and Argentina on the second day, August 17, of the FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship in Ankara, Turkey. What followed was a three set long clash at the end of which the home team was celebrating their 3-0 win and
entry into the semi-finals of the tournament.
It did not take much effort for Turkey, who was cheered on by the home crowd, to make the clean sweep over Argentina. The first set of the match was fairly one sided as the Argentineans struggled with getting accustomed to playing on the court of their opponents.
The second set saw some spark in Argentina but it was not bright enough to hamper the Turkish squad from bagging another win. The third set followed the same course as its predecessor and the match ended in favour of Turkey at the following final set scores:
25-14, 25-18 and 25-18.
The coach of the Turkish team, Sahin Catma, shared his feeling at the press conference after the match in the following words: “I’m satisfied; we made it to the semi finals. Each player contributes to the excellent team performance. That’s the key point
to success.”
Whereas the Argentinean coach, Guillermo Caceres, expressed his views by giving these comments: “Congratulations to Turkey. They can make it to the gold medal match. We can learn a lot from them.”
The first set of the match was dominated by Turkey from the onset. The Argentineans could not get in to their stride as the Turkish attack rained down powerful spikes on them. Turkey was able to get the lead early on and once the Turks were leading, they
never let go of the advantage until Turkey had won the opening set at 25-14.
Argentina started the second set of the game with more confidence that showed in the way they played their game. The Argentineans were able to get themselves the lead at the first technical time out at 8-4. However, the Turks made the match a tie at 8-8
and were able to push past ahead at 15-18. After that point, it was only a matter of time before the Turks could seal a win at 25-18.
Turkey had the lead in the middle of the set with Argentina lagging behind all through. Turkey was not significantly challenged and was able to head towards a 25-18 win easily.
Ceylon Arisan was the highest scorer in the match at nine points for the Turkish squad while the Argentinean players that scored the most points were Maria Sol Calvete and Sol Piccolo, both of whom tallied six points each.
With their recent win, the Chinese have been able to top Pool E in the tournament.
