Turkey sweeps Cuba in a World Grand Prix match – Volleyball news
The second match on the second day of the final round of the FIVB World Grand Prix took place on Thursday, June 28, 2012. The two teams that contested against each other in the host city of Ningbo, China were Cuba and Turkey. The match was being played at
the Ningbo Beilun Gymnasium which was filled with a total of 2000 spectators. By the end of an hour and thirteen minutes, Turkey had secured a win by making a clean sweep over their opponents.
Turkey won the three sets back to back at the following set scores: 25-23, 25-9 and 25-20.
The coach of the Turkish squad, Motta Marco Aurelio, expressed his excitement at winning the match in the following words, “In my opinion, today we played a good game, we served very well... I know Cuba can be in better level. I am happy we played in very
good level. Yesterday we won but not played a good match, but today, we won and played a good match.”
On the other hand, the Cuban coach Juan Carlos Gala Rodriguez expressed his feelings by giving the following comments, “We are not good today, we don't know what can be done on court to face the Turkey team.”
The players who were able to post the most points in the match belonged to the Turkish squad as both Neriman Ozsoy and Neslihan Darnel tallied a score of 12 points each.
The Turkish were able to take the lead at 9-3 as soon as the first set of the match started but Cuba eventually tied the score at 15-15 and later moved on to take the lead at 16-15. However, Cuba made errors that helped Turkey to bag the opening set at 25-23.
Cuba took the lead in the second set at 5-1 but when the second technical timeout came, Turkey was leading at 16-8. After that, Turkey did not look back as they stormed to take the set at 25-9.
Cubans stepped up their game in the third set but they still could not overcome the strong play of the Turkish squad who steadily moved on to seal the deal at 25-20.
