Turkish Grand Prix 2011: Raceday - Formula One Highlights (Part 14)
Welcome back to the action. Mark Webber had made up considerable amount of ground on Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari and looked set to challenge for on track position. The Australian was effectively less than a second behind the Spaniard. Moments later,
Webber used the Drag Reduction System (DRS) to get a run on the scarlet car on the braking area as both cars entered Turn 12. Alonso tried to fight back through Turns 13 and 14 but was held off by the Red Bull.
The duel continued as the race headed to Lap 52. Fernando Alonso was trying hard to come back on Mark Webber for 2nd position but failed to pull off the stunt after 2 attempts on the same lap.
The Webber–Alonso battle enabled Sebastian Vettel to further extend his lead to over 8 seconds. The Ferrari clearly seemed outnumbered. Turning our attention to Alonso’s teammate, Felipe Massa found himself stuck way back in traffic and unable to provide
some much needed backup to his teammate. The Brazilian driver meanwhile overtook Michael Schumacher for 12th position but the seven-time World Champion was able to come back and retake the position – Alonso was evidently on his own.
Staying with Schumacher and Massa, both drivers managed to get past Jaime Alguersuari’s Toro Rosso. However, the Ferrari was able to get a run on the Mercedes as the German was forced wide which further allowed Alguersuari to get his nose alongside
– Schumacher was able to fight him off as he saw the scarlet car zoom by.
Elsewhere on track, Nico Rosberg was able to overtake Jenson Button for 5th position on the back front straight. Heikki Kovalainen came in for his final scheduled pit stop.
Adrian Sutil, Sergio Perez and Jaime Alguersuari seemed to be locked in a 3-way battle for 13th place. The Toro Rosso dived into the pits to make its 4th pit stop of the day.
Mark Webber had established a 2-second advantage over Fernando Alonso but hadn’t made up any ground on his teammate ahead. Sebastian Vettel was on the verge of out lapping the duel for 12th position between Adrian Sutil and Sergio Perez
and managed to lap the duo safely on the back front stretch.
