I think the problem here is not your boyfriend, but it is his friend whom he refers to as "kanka" which means "best friend" in informal speech. Because this "kanka" is desperate to find a way to be a citizen of the U.S.A, and it seems he can do everything to succeed in that aim. Your boyfriend obviously cannot turn his back to him and wants to help him  do that.
