Turkish women beat the Koreans in an Olympic match - Volleyball News
Korean women’s team crossed ways with Turkish counterparts on Friday and dropped the decision in five sets, 3-2 (25-16, 21-25, 25-18, 19-25, 15-12).
The city of London hosted the match, while all the action took place at the Earls Court. A total of 13,500 spectators watched the cracking action of volleyball, which continued for more than two hours. Korea shifted to an overall record of 2-2 after losing
the match, while Turkey improved to 2-2 with victory. Both teams now have the equal chance to advance to the quarterfinals. However, the situation will become evident at the end of preliminary round on Sunday.
Turkish top-gun Darnel showed no mercy and devastated the opponents with a variety of attacks. She topped all the scorers with match-high 27 points. Likewise, Gözde Sonsirma and captain Esra Gümüs did well in the match. They finished with 13 and 12 respectively.
Kim Yeon-Koung of Korea put up valiant effort and contributed 21 points, in the failing effort.
Turks caught a good start in the match and came strong on the rival side. Koreans lagged behind and failed to catch up with the opponents. First set ended in Turkey’s favour at 25-16, while Korea hit the equalizer in the following set. Koreans hit back aggressively
and claimed second set, 25-21.
Turkey retook the lead by winning third set with seven points. Therefore, Korea created the dead-lock of 2-2 by capturing fourth set.
In the decisive final set, Turkey got better and sent 15-12 on board. Turks secured a total of three sets in the match and settled for victory.
“Our performance is getting better and better. Overall, we have to make fewer mistakes in every fundamental” singled out Neslihan Darnel after anchoring Turkey to a 3-2 win over Korea by scoring 27 points. “We still have a chance to get a medal, I hope.
I can tell more after the last game in the Pool with USA”.
Marco Aurelio Motta, the Turkish mentor, was satisfied with his team’s performance. He said it is their first appearance in the Olympics and the team has already claimed six points, which is pretty impressive. Motta seemed confident to earn a berth in the
quarterfinals.
“Compared to our match with Brazil we were not in good shape today, but it is important that we still played our best” said Korea Kim Hee-Jin. “We will definitely cheer up for the next match against China, an opponent we know pretty well”.
Turkey will have tough challenge to deal with USA in the next match on Sunday whereas Korea will go against China. Check back for more news and updates.
