Turkmenistan boxers advance in Asian Games
Turkmenistan posted two wins on the opening day of the 2010 Asian Games boxing competition at the Foshan Gymnasium on Tuesday.
Serdar Hudayberdiyev and Allaberdy Ishankuliyev easily progressed to the last 16 of their respective divisions. Hudayberdiyev blanked Rahim Md Abdur of Bangladesh 6-0 in their bout in the 64kg division. Ishankuliyev did not break a sweat as his Kuwaiti opponent
Naser M A Alenezi failed to show up in their 56kg division showdown.
Kyrgyzstan also sent two fighters to the next round. Meder Mamakeev hammered Sri Lanka's Suresh Pattiarachchi 7-1 in the 52kg class while Ermek Sakenov stunned local bet Hu Richabilige 3-1 in the 64kg division.
Ulu Syimyk Abdyldabek, however, failed to join his countrymen in the last 16 as he suffered a surprise 4-5 defeat to Bhutan's Phub Sigyel in the 56kg division.
Sharing the spotlight with the two former Soviet states is South Korea, who also went 2-for-2 for the day. Kim Ju-seong posted a 5-3 win over Kazakhstan's Miras Zhakupov in the 52kg class while Lee Jin-young blanked Laotian Khounthavisak Moneboudsady 7-0
in the 56kg division.
North Korea joined its southern neighbour in triumph as Pak Jong-chol posted a 4-0 win over another Laotian, Xayyaphone Chanthasone, in the 52kg class.
In other bouts in the 52kg category, Jordan's Mohammad Alwadi dominated Saudi Arabia's Sultan Mohammed A Almuntashiri 10-2, while Uzbekistan's Shahriyor Isakov defeated Mongolian Tugstsogt Nyambayar 9-2.
Joining them in the last 16 was Indian boxer Suranjoy Singh, who scored a 7-2 win over Thailand's Chatchai Butdee. Singh built a 1-0 lead after the first round and scored three more points in the second to extend his advantage to 4-0 heading into the final
round.
In the 56kg class, Iderkhuu Enkhjargal of Mongolia beat Saman Silva of Sri Lanka 9-2, Omran Akbari of Iran stopped Leong Chi Meng of Macau, while Daniyar Tulegenov of Kazakhstan trounced Charly Suarez of the Philippines 7-1.
Also progressing to the last 16 was Syria's Wessam Salamana, who ousted Timor Leste's Otnel Negrito Baptista 9-2
Also posting victories in the 64kg division were Pakistan's Aamir Khan and Uzbekistan's Sanjarbek Rahmanov. Khan edged Japan's Masatsugu Kawachi 5-4 while Rahmanov walloped Qatar's Abdulla Alhadi 6-0.
The big boys also saw action on opening day. Chinese Taipei's Yang Yu-ting stopped Saudi Arabia's Wesam Marjir Alalawi in the lone bout in the 75kg division. The referee halted the bout at the 2:59 mark of the second round due to head blows.
In the super heavyweight division, Chinese giant Zhang Zhilei outclassed Mongolian Iderbat Davaalkhagva. The Beijing Olympics silver medallist pummelled his opponent with hard blows, prompting the referee to stop the fight in the second round.
