I would like to convert my Computer into a DVR. However, the channels i wish to record i can only get through a cable box. Here in lies my dilemma. Would i need to leave the cable box on the channel i want to record while it is recording?

You can do it that way but most people buy a TV tuner card that includes what is called an "IR blaster". You put the end of the IR blaster in front of the cable box. The computer then sends it signals that make it act like a remote control to change channels.

If you are using a cable box to watch premium (encrypted) channels then you are stuck with using the cable box. If people can get these same channels with a DTV or HDTV that's directly connected to the cable system, then make sure you buy a TV tuner that includes a "QAM" digital cable tuner. That way you could directly connect your computer/DVR to the cable outlet and not use the cable box.

  2. The answer is yes-your computer will set the cable box to the channel to be recorded, at the appropriate time, and you won't be able to watch anything else while it's recording.
