Question:

Turn of the century French music?

Im trying to find the type of music listened to in France around the turn of the century - before WWI and before the roaring twenties. Basically music from the Belle Epoque era. Would anyone be able to guide me to some artists I can look up? The closest thing I can research so far is french "salon" music. But have yet to be able to find any artists from that genre to listen to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  1. I don't know what you're talking about, BUT here are some French composers who wrote charming pieces, immensely reflecting their French culture:

Ravel, Debussy, Romeau, Dutilleux, Albert Russel, Faure, Bizet, Offenbach, Saint-Saens, and tons more

    previously close until january 4th

Ravel born 1875 - dead 1937 is significantly known as a XXth century musician

Fauré: a biography in english - many french do this without drum : http://www.adgparis.com/gabrielfaure_en....

    Same for M.Boulc'h - born 1891 - dead 1951

    Same for Damia ( ML Damien ) - 1892-1978

Same for Yvette Guilbert who was dead in 1944 - breathtaking high-french texts with a load of non-said eroticism as it was mandatory at that time

And then since today is 01/1 why not this one :

It is good to breath the good wind of right information

  3. Georges Bizet, Jules Massenet, Gabriel Fauré, Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy were the principle composers of the late 19th century.

In the area of  popular music the turn of the century was characterized by  music hall entertainment.

Yvette Guilbert was a major star as was Félix Mayol, Marie-Louise Damien (who was discovered by Mayol), and Marguerite Boulc'h (whose stage name was Fréhel).
