Turner and Young star as Philadelphia 76ers edge out Dallas Mavericks on Elton Brand's homecoming: NBA Recap
Even Turner dropped 22 points and Thaddeus Young added 20 with 7 rebounds as the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Dallas Mavericks 100-98 at the Wells Fargo Center Tuesday night. Jrue Holiday had 18 points and 7 assists while Maalik
Wayns chipped in with 10 points.
Chris Kaman paced the Mavericks with 20 points; Shawn Marion and Elton Brand posted 17 points and 8 rebounds each, while Vince Carter came off the bench to add 15 points for the Mavs, who lost their second game in a row.
"He's a man's man and that's the ultimate compliment I can give to him. It's extremely hard coming back to a place you have played and play well because it's so emotional and all that. The way he played big and hit timely shots
and gave us a physical presence was very impressive." Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle on Elton brand, who played his first game against his former franchise.
The Sixers got off to a good start and an 8-0 burst early in the first period put them up 15-6. Minutes later, the Mavericks went for a 5-0 run to reduce the deficit down to 13-17, but the 76ers pushed their lead to 21-13 late.
The Mavs responded by taking the next 8 points to tie the score on 21 and were leading 31-28 by the end of the period.
Dallas were up 42-36 after the early goings of the second period and a 6-0 run pushed their advantage to 48-39 in no time. The Sixers started slashing the deficit late and Holiday scored 6 straight points to make it a one point
game on 49-50. The score was tied on 53 before Brand made a three point play that put the Mavericks up by 56-53 at halftime.
It was neck and neck between the teams in the third period and the score was tied quite a number of times. Holiday made a jumper early in the quarter to put Phillies ahead on 61-58. Mayo scored a deuce later to tie the score on
72 and the 76ers were leading 75-73 by the end of it.
The Mavs committed 7 turnovers in the first three periods but gave away the ball 8 times in the fourth for a total of 15 turnovers on the night. It was pretty close in the early stages of the period with no team pulling ahead before
the Sixers went on rampage with a sudden 12-0 burst that put them up by 91-81. They pushed their lead to 100-93 before the Mavs came back and made it a two point game on 98-100, with 35.9 seconds on the regulation.
The Mavericks got plenty of chances to score a bucket but could not avail them and went down 98-100 on the night, their second loss in a row.
