Question:

Turning Off PC At night ... same old question?

Will anything be damaged in my pc if i keep leaving my pc overnight? I turn off the monitor, speakers, mouse all i can, but the actual pc has to stay on to download. Will parts have shorter life, bcuz for example a cpu has to keep working etc etc.

I really want to take good care of my pc :-)

Just to check if any of these parts are sensitive to leaving them overnight, my specs are:

CPU: Pentium D Dual core 3.2GHz (thats 3.2ghz x2)

G. Card: GeForce 8600GTS

PSU: 400w unbranded (this is a little worrying)

HDD: 250gb Maxtor DiamondMax 21

Mobo: GF7050-M7 (is it possible its made by GeForce / Nvidia cuz i was confused since i bought it!)

Well, thanks in advance

  1. nothing will happen -

;) pc will be just fine

  2. i have two computers and leave them on 24/7 unless i'm out of town. I've had them for years and they're fine

  3. Having a paperless office, I leave my desktop on all night and day to receive faxes but I reboot once daily.  In six years of doing so, I have once had to replace the power unit and once the monitor.  No other problems.

  4. I hardly ever turn my laptop off at night, meaning it is on constantly. After like 48hours I find it to be slower than normal, yet restarting it or turning it off for a while usually does the trick. I wouldnt leave it running if the fan isnt working properly, as this can cause a fire. I remember when the fan in my PC stopped working it smelt like burning electrics - not good.

I wouldn't have thought it would harm your computer, but if it becomes slower, then just try restarting it.

  5. nah, dont worry about it.

  6. I'm in the biz and i have never repaired a computer that was damaged as the result of it being turned on and off several times a day. Leaving one on 24/7 to save it is dumb. Most who do it dont even know why it used to be recommended. All it does is suck in 6-8 times the dust and actually does more harm than good. If youre downloading stuff that's understandable but to just leave it on--nope. I once replaced the PSU on a customers rig that actually caught on fire because its fan got so caked with dust it quit spinning. Wouldn't that be great if that happened when you were sleeping or away from home? Spending $10 a month on electricity and sucking dust into a tower 24/7 to save a cheapo $20 power supply is retarded. I know a lot of computer savvy people and not one of them does it. Go green and turn the thing off if you dont need it running.

  7. Its usually the hard disk that takes a canning.

best thing to do is to get a spare and have it ready with OS and all the apps you need to do what you do.Doing this in advance can save you a major headache.

Or you could get a great big 2nd drive and download to that over night, that way your keeping your essential internals free of wear and tear .

  8. just turn it off you be fine plus its costing you money keeping  it on all night ,downloads will pick up next time you boot up

  9. This one is five years old and is on 24/7/365. The only time it gets switched off is if I've got to do something that requires it. The only thing that switches off is the monitor after an hour. Everything else stays on.

I've done that for the last 14 years with all my computers and never had a breakdown! As an example most companies run 24 hours now and they don't switch theirs off!
