Turning clothes into Yarn?

I've seen it done a few times when people take clothes and cut it up into yarn. I know about recycling knitting sweaters but I'm talking about items that arn't knitting. I saw someone take a bunch of bellarina outfits and turn it into some beatiful yarn. I was just wondering how it was done.

If the tutus are made of tulle you can cut them into strips like this:
