Question:

Turning off Daytime Running Lights ( DRL )?

I would like to turn off the daytime running lights in my 1998 Mercury Sable. This is because I want to go to the drive-in theatre and last time everything we tried wouldnt work to get them to turn off.

There is a fuse under the hood for the Daytime Running Lights (DRL) Module. Would it harm anything if I just took the fuse out?

  1. Removing the fuse when you need them to be off is probably the easiest and safest way to turn these off.       The car "may throw a code" or a dash light may come on to tell you that a light is burned out but that's all.

I'd replace it before going back on the road though.

  2. Taking the DRL fuse out shouldn't be a problem.  You might also try pushing the parking brake down one or two clicks before you start the engine (or turn the key to "accessory" -- whatever you're doing to get the DRL's to come on).  That will disable the DRL's on many cars.  Please don't try it while you're moving!  If your Sable has automatic headlights, taking the DRL fuse out might disable that function.  Whatever you do, be sure you can turn the regular headlights on -- I suspect you'll need them to get home after the movie.  Let us know how it goes...

  3. instead of risking that i would simply go to the store and buy black construction paper and tape them over your lights.
