Turnovers cost Kansas City Chiefs big as they lose 20-37 against San Diego Chargers – NFL Recap
San Diego Chargers went to Kansas City anticipating a tough encounter. However, it was not much difficult to win, 37-20, against the woeful Chiefs on Sunday, September 30, 2012, at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City.
Chiefs only had themselves to blame for their loss at home after giving away six turnovers during the game; five of those turnovers came in the first quarter.
Chargers took full advantage of the given opportunities and scored 27 points during the first half. The offence was fast and decisive, wasting no time to score.
It looked quite an easy outing on the field for the Chargers, who had a tough time in Week 3 against Atlanta Falcons. According to the Associated Press, Chargers safety Eric Weddle said:
"It was like turnover after turnover after turnover in that first quarter. A lot of times it's just guys making good hits, tipped balls. There's stuff to improve, but we came back after last week, when we didn't play well."
The turnovers broke the backbone of Chiefs and although they did manage to score in the second half, it was too late for a comeback. Chiefs head Coach Romeo Crennel said:
"It was a total team effort, basically, in not playing very well. It was bad football. You could see it was bad football. But we have a game to be played next week and we have to stay together and not point fingers. . . We're going to see if we can get better
somehow, and play better versus good football teams."
Chargers started their score with a short four-yard pass from quarterback Philip Rivers to wide receiver Eddie Royal for a touchdown.
After that, Chiefs started their long run of mistakes with quarterback Matt Cassel throwing his third pass which was intercepted by Weddle who then made way for kicker Nick Novak for a 25-yard field goal.
The second quarter looked almost the same with Novak getting another field goal. Chiefs finally scored their first points of the game with a superb 37-yard run from running back Jamaal Charles.
Chiefs failed to capitalise on their scoring as Cassel’s through was intercepted again, this time by Chargers linebacker Donald Butler, who returned 21 yards for another touchdown. Chargers ended first half 27-6.
There was not much activity in the third quarter apart from Cassel’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Charles to take the score 27-13.
Jackie Battle got another touchdown in his bag by catching a four-yard throw from Rivers. After that came up a fantastic 29-yard pass from Cassel to wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, who was the only Chiefs’ player who looked good during the game.
Chargers put the final nail in the coffin with a 45-yard field goal by Novak, taking the score to 37-20.
