Turns on, can listen to music, no screen display!!

Question

I can turn on the device and i can turn on the music...(with some frustration)... but the device does not have the OLED screen illuminated enough to see at all. I cannot even find my way to change the brightness setting(which i believe is a very unlikely problem since i have not changed it) and i even went as far as to go into a pitch black room (completely dark, cant even see my own hand) with only the slightest light coming from the device, not so much as to be visible. Can anyone explain?
