Turns out the Buffalo Bills aren't good in Canada either; lose eighth straight
The Buffalo Bills dropped to 0-8 after losing to the Chicago Bears 22-19 Sunday after in Toronto, Canada. It was the third regular season game the franchise has played in Canada, the first this season,
and they have yet to win one.
“It hurts," Bills coach Chan Gailey said. "It feels like someone kicked you in the stomach."
It’s the third game in a row the Bills could have won but didn’t. Last week they lost 10-13 in overtime against the Kansas City Chiefs, and the week before lost 34-37 to the Baltimore Ravens in overtime.
The Bills held a 19-14 lead in the fourth quarter in front of 50,746 quiet fans at the Rogers Centre, but with the Bills driving, Tim Jennings intercepted a Ryan Fitzpatrick pass on the Chicago 38-yard
line, returning it to the Buffalo 23. Just a few plays later the Bears were in the end zone, and a two-point conversion put the Bears up by three for good.
Fitzpatrick ended the game completing 31 of 51 passes for 299 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions.
“I almost dropped that ball about four or five times, but I was able to regain it,” said Jennings, “I was just playing that play aggressive, because we knew we needed a turnover.”
Fred Jackson fumbled the ball early in the third quarter, helping set up another Bears touchdown. Chicago scored 15 points off turnovers.
While the Bears aren’t complaining, the Bills were not enthralled with playing a home game away from Ralph Wilson Stadium.
“We miss them (the Ralph Wilson fans),” said Bill’s safety Donte Whitner. “We might consider this a road game and the previous two. It’s like we’ve been away for three road games and we miss them. They
energize the entire team and we missed them today. That’s no excuse to lose a football game but that 12th man does help.”
The Bills beat the Bears in total offense 340-283, but only had 37 rushing yards from their running backs on 16 carries. The Chicago run defence, ranked third in the league, did an excellent job of stopping
the Bills on the ground.
Jay Cutler put up decent numbers after being criticized for not learning the Bear’s offence quickly enough. He completed 17 or 30 passes for 188 yards with two touchdowns.
The Bear improved their record to 5-3. They’ll host the Minnesota Vikings (3-5) next week in a divisional matchup while the Bills go home, their real home, to face the Detroit Lions (2-6) and see if they
can't finally win one, instead of just coming close.
