Question:

Turtle Mating??

I looked it up and it seems like they're mating. But as far as we know it looks like they're both boys. We have one Red Ear Slider and one Yellow Bellied Slider. I also saw that the turtles had to be five inches long to mate but neither turtle is 5 inches long.

  1. When you see courtship behavior between two inappropriate turtles (wrong size, species, gender, etc.) you are usually seeing one of a few behaviors:

    1. Aggressive domination. One turtle thinks it is boss and owns the water, and will bully the other. Bullying can be blocking it from food or shelter, biting, mating, or courting.

    2. A recently sexually mature male will often 'experiment' or 'practice' with inappropriate partners, possibly driven by hormones... sounds sort of like human teens, huh?

    3. Stressed turtles, especially ones that are overcrowded, will do this as well- and this is one of the most common scenarios.

  2. Okay, Males will have darker colors and Long Claws. Females are bigger than males and lighter.

I have seen Unusual slider behaviore like that. If there doing the mating dance one turtle will be caressing the other turtles face and shell.

There not mating. There trying to but it wont work, unless there male and female.
