I am planning of giving away my Tropical Fish to a good friend of mine. I was thinking of re-using it for Turtles or terrapins. It is 15 gallons, I will re-plant with live plants, add god quality gravel, rocks that will be high enough to be out of the water for rest.

What sort of turtle would fit well in there and are easy and readily avaliable to buy?

Thanks.

  1. Get a snake or a lizard. turtles need bigger space.

  2. no turtle could live its life in there. you can get a baby red ear slider but he will out grow it. and red ear sliders are much work much work. id get a different reptile.

  3. Forget turtles. Any turtle will outgrow the tank in a year. You also don't want to give turtles access to gravel. Finally, stacks of rocks could slip and pin a turtle underwater to drown.

  4. if you add water to your tank then you could raise a red eared slider in there. they're easy to raise and are cheap

  5. turtles need much more room than a 15 gallon. most need a tank at least of 50 gallons. if you are looking for a reptile to fit in a 15 gallon consider a small lizard, hermit crabs, or an african clawed frog.

    hope this helps

  6. no turtles..tank is best suited for frogs..

Sliders, Cooters , painted ,map and yellow bellied are require the same care and feeding. I have 2 Sliders  that are 36 yrs old!! Plus an 8 and 5 yr old.

I have had them in a pond for about 6 yrs now..

They basking 8 to 10 hrs a day for the vitamin D they need to grow, they need a good rep light.

Leave the heater on 75 to 78 degrees always.

Their water needs to be clean otherwise they get sick easily from dirty water cause they p**p allot. They need a good filter system?

You need to feed them feeder guppies, goldfish or minnows for protein and calcium.

They need leafy greens for vitamins.

  7. You will have to get a bigger tank later in the turtles' life as they all grow relatively big. Red eared, Yellow bellied, snake necked, musk, painted, cooters, and mud turtles are all readily available. Snapping turtles grow  much too big and can be very vicious- so don't even try it. What is god- quality gravel by the way? Is it blessed?

  8. No turtle species in that size.

A couple of ADF/ACF could work, with some shrimp:).

    Or an Axolytol.

  9. hi, a turtle needs at least 40 gallons for it to be happy, 15 gallon tank is fine for a baby but it will outgrow it in about a year or two. Trust me i know i bought two red earedd sliders with a 20 gallons tank and the total came £150 including filter, heater decor etc. the turts were about 2inches and 8months 4inches so i needed a new tank. i ended up spending 200+ because it wasnt just the tank expenses but the heater had to be changed and also the filter, so it would be best if u housesd somthing else insteat of turtles.
