  1. goldfish, any as long as you dont mind the turtle eating them

  2. Well the best fish is goldfish and minnows and or guppies. You see turtles eat anything that moves on land or in water.

I have fed my two 36 yr old sliders goldfish their whole life with a few minnows tossed in their diet. They have never been sick either!!

The bigger the environment the bigger the healthier the turtle.

Did you know that they need to bask under a reptile light UVA for 8 to 10 hrs a day for the vitamin D that they need to grow. So that means getting a turtle dock also.

Leave the heater on 75 to 78 degrees always.

Their water needs to be clean otherwise they get sick easily from dirty water cause they p**p allot.

You need a good filter system! Gravel larger than they can swallow.

You need to feed them feeder guppies, goldfish or minnows for protein and calcium daily drop 20 or so in the tanks and watch them disappear! This way when they swim for their dinner they get exercise also!

TOSS in a bird cuttle bone in the water for calcium. it will dissolve real slow and if they eat it that’s fine!!

They can have garden worm, meal worms, crickets, flies, crayfish and  anything that moves!

They need leafy greens Romaine, Butter lettuce. (Iceberg and cabbage are bad for them, any other leafy greens will do) for vitamin A that they need at least 3 to 4 times a week.

You probably already know that they get sick easily, shell rot, respiratory sickness, lopsided swimming, coughing, blowing bubbles from their nose, Swollen cloudy eyes means lacking in Vitamin A. Which we all need for good eyes. Google ‘vegetables with Vitamin A.

    I wish you luck.

  3. The diet for the turtle should be reptomin pellets ( and other nutritious pellets) crickets, mealworms, bloodworms, shrimp, and krill. All of this is found dead at the petstore!;) Fish should be fed 2x a month max, the reason why is because the are vitamin b deficient, and not a good source of protien or vitamins for that matter, so dont listen to people that keep on telling you every single week! That is too often! They also need vegetation, get kale, mustard greens, romaine lettuce, and collard greens. Drop all of the food in the tank once a day, and remove any leftover bits after a few hours. By the way ALL of the protien food ( dead food, that was alive once) should be dusted with a calcium supplement ( powder) twice a week and you need to get a cuttlebone found in the bird aisle of the petstore and drop it in the water for him to knaw on, keep it there for a while (month) until they eat all of it, then get another. Once all of these things are done your turtles will be pretty happy!

  4. I have a Plecostomus (sucker fish) in with my turtle.  You just have to make sure it's big enough that your turtle won't bother it also, these fish have armoured bodies.  Give the fish plenty of hiding spots because that's pretty much all the do during the day is hide, and will come out at night when your turtle is sleeping to eat.  I've has a plecostomus in with my turtle for a LONG time and my turtle hasn't even bothered it, the only time she was even curious in it was when it was when I had the bag with the fish in it floating in the water.  Sadly, I have to sell the fish to someone who has a bigger tank.  They get big, and mine has already outgrown a 100 gallon tank.

  5. Goldfish are high in fat, have a large scale ratio and are not good for food feeder fish in general.  I'd recommend rosy minnows, and guppies.

If you're asking about large fish, which your turtle can't eat, but will pick at?  It's a balance, if the fish is too small to eat the turtle, and until the turtle grows large enough to eat the fish.  But, if the turtle doesn't get eaten?  The fins on the fish ARE going to get torn up.

In nature - the bigger fish eats the smaller turtle, or the bigger turtle eats the smaller fish.

The are 'mortal enemies' in the wild.

What are you trying to achieve in this tank?  A display, or a safe habitat for one or the other?  Pick a species you want to win, and provide smaller of the other.  Easy.

Or, do the right thing and don't try to mix 'pet fish' with a 'pet water turtle.'

    It can't be done.

Good luck, and I hope this was helpful.

***ADD IF this was about algae control?  Try 1 level Tbsp. of Sea salt (no, not Morton's) to every 10 gal. of water.  Buy it at a pet store.  This also helps reduce the risk of illness for your turtle in general.

Good luck, and enjoy your pet.

  6. Most turtles eat fish, so I would do alot of research before attempting to put any fish in with them!!  I have a friend that tried it and couldn't figure out why his fish were disappearing while his turtle was getting fatter and fatter!!

  7. If you are considering them as pets, then don't put them in with turtles as they will probably be eaten.  As far as using them for food, you can use feeder minnows or guppies.
