I have a yellow slider and he is still small, about 2 1/2 inches dia. he is currently housed in a 10gal. tank BUT I only have about 5 inches of water (enough to get into the filter and circulate water) its set up with a few rocks for him to bask on, and one to hid under that also serves as a base to our waterfall.... pics would help but I do not currently have them on hand, does this sound like a suitable home for my little Franklin?

  1. For now... as long as he can swim freely it's fine, but they grow fast and soon you will need a 55 gallon or larger!

  2. The tank is already too small. You might try replacing the rocks with a ramp to provide both basking site and hidey-hole. That will allow you to add more water.

  3. That set up sounds fine for now but you will need to make it bigger, a month should be fine though, they grow pretty slow. The only thing I would say is you could put more water in the tank for him to swim in. With aquatic turtle you can't have to much water.

  4. Sorry, but that is far too small of a habitat, and they grow no matter how big the tank is- but they may well develop in a deformed way or otherwise injured from it.

Why so little water? This is a pond turtle- it routinely lives and swims in water several feet deep. As long as it has places it can climb out, it will be fine. Besides, bigger tanks and the right filter means less work for you.
