Question:

Turtle that doesn't need land from fish store?

I recently purchased a turtle from a LFS. He was in a tank full of African cichlids, swimming around. I was told he was a mud turtle, and didn't need any terrain... he simply lived int he water and came up for air when needed. He does not bother the fish, nor do they bother him. He seems fine in my tank always swimming around, but it just seems a little suspicious.

Does anyone have experience with this type of turtle?

does it look like these guys..?

They need water, fish to eat and leafy greens and at least 8 to 10 hrs of basking out of water on a basking area.

I have had two Sliders for 36 yrs now plus a 8 yr old and a 5 yr old..

I have had them in a 150gal pond for about 6 yrs now..

**Here is some important and a lot of info. If he or she is small get feeder guppies .

  2. you might want to google mud turtle to make sure that is exactly what you have and then you have to know how to care for it properly otherwise it won't last long.

  3. It sounds like another case of the pet shop has NO idea what its talking about.

All water turtles need a basking area and UVB light.  Turtles are semi-aquatic reptiles, not aquatic.

You need to google water turtle sites, and find out what kind of turtle you have so you can provide for its specific needs.

I'll post a few links below to get you started on your quest.

Good luck, and I hope this has been helpful.

  4. A friend of mine had a mud turtle and he did not do anything but hide under rocks and came up for air very infrequently. He never basked in the sun. Please research the breed more. I'd say he needs something to hide under (all turtles like to hide).
