Question:

Turtles keep biting eachother?

We've had a Stinkpot turtle and a Red Eared Slider in the same tank for two years and they have been fine together, but the past few days the Stinkpot, which is about half the size of the Slider, has been trying to bite the Slider's head. Why are they doing this? Could it be a mating ritual? And should I separate them? Thank you!!!

  1. u could separate them and see wat happens, but only 4 a day or two.

and if baby turtles appear, well then they were mating.

    hope this helps.

  2. separate them it sounds like there is a territory war going on all was fine for two years but now they are maturing and don't like the other one in the tank, you really should not mix two different types of turtle like this, it is not mating it is fighting and if you don't separate them you could end up loosing one, the stink pot is telling the slider he may be bigger but he is the boss, the best thing to do is separate them and you will find your turtles will be a lot happier, best of luck honey

  3. for territory risings or madding time.

  4. their probabley at the age where their getting territorial, you should sepperate them.

  5. Don't mix two species...it is very unnatural for them to live in a confined space together.  Fighting is common.  Yes, keep them in separate tanks.

  6. SEPERATE THEM!!!!!! They WILL KILL each other.

  7. SEPARATE THE TWO!! I used to be in a biology class in high school where our teacher also had 2 turtles in the same tank. They seemed fine with each other for a good year, and then out of nowhere the students all asked one morning "What happened to the other turtle?" and our teacher just looked at us and said "It's a really sad story. I came in this morning to find the one turtle had bitten the others head off"

  8. Separate them and then slowly ween them into the idea of staying with each other for short amounts of time. but then raise the time u allow them 2 be together. The same happened 2 me. Hope it all works out =D

  9. same thing happened to me, there was no way to stop them so I let one go so they didn't kill each other

maybe try separating them for a few weeks

  10. well they are different species that aren't suppose to get along in a tank together. You may need to get rid of one before it kills the lil one. There was a kid on here 2 days ago that had a big turtle bite the legg off his lil one..

you need to seperate before something like this happens.

I have had 2 sliders for 36 yrs now plus a 7 yr old and a 5 yr old. This is how I have taken care of them for 36 yrs. Great pets.

  11. It's not a good idea to put 2 different species of turtles together in the same tank. Just stick to the same species in each tank.

  12. If the tank is big enough maybe you should put a partition in it until you gain more knowledge on their behavior lol...

  13. Maybe they are just becoming territorial, that's how my rats are, except they just smack each other...

  14. Hi Amber,

I would at least keep them separate until you get an answer to this new behaviour.
