Turtles????

Question

earlier this morning, we found a turtle on the road. the shell was about 4in by 5in. the stomach was blackish brown. we picked it up and put it in our backyard. our backyard has a series of tunnels from other animals. the turtle climed into them and has not come out yet. how long can it stay down there and what type of turtle was it???

its prolly a box turtle and he will stay down there till he gets hungry or thirsty

I think it might have been a ''painted turtle.'' Dont worry,if its down there its eathere sleeping alot, or it could be in hibernation. But there is a low chance that it might be sick.If you can, pull it out of the hole and check for sighns of sickness.                                                                                                                       Good luck!

it might be a box turtle. maybe, he may just feel safe down there.

It sounds to me like it was a tortoise. My family and I did the SAME thing. He can stay down there for hours...even days. I wouldn't worry about it. If I were you, I would put some strawberries or beans on a plate and place it near the entrance. Also put some water there too.

Most likely he is lost in the tunnles or finds it safe and doesent want to came out and i dght it is a turtle sounds like a gofer tortis to me gofer tortise love the underground and sand and are brown somtimes alittle blackmixed if it is a gofer tortis it is iligal to kill it ir ti harm it and they love grass so if you think it may be gofer tortis youmight want to call the humain society to come pick it up oor you might not ever have to cut your grass again.
