I am considering becoming a tutor, but I need help. Do you have any ideas on things like where I could host it, where it could be, how I could help them? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

  1. Public libraries are a good spot.  Most of the time the students tell you what they need.

  2. If you have transport, you can go to the home of the people you tutor. I did this for several years. A lot of kids need help with their homework for all subjects and often parents don't understand the content.

  3. Online tutoring has many advantages to both the tutor and the one being tutored. I teach classes online using two different platforms, Moodle and Elluminate. Elluminate is terrific for the 'face to face' educational activities and Moodle is great for the things that the students need to access 24 hours a day and 7 days a week such as assignments, gradebook, contact information, links, etc.

Elluminate is a live, online classroom where the kids take a link to get to class. Live classes are much more enjoyable that visit a website and read the work types. Within the classroom we have full duplex audio built in, text chat, whiteboard, webcam, and more.

You can try out Elluminate by signing up for the three-seater. It is free and may be al that you need as a tutor. If you decide to teach full-scale classes, you can move up to more seats for a fee. The link is ...

Moodle is a course management platform that is useful for the 24 hour a day 7 days a week types of resources and activities. It is open source meaning the software itself is free. You will need to have it hosted on a server, but that isn't too formidable and most server rental is quite affordable.

To learn more about Moodle, feel free to drop in to our Homeschool course co-op using it. The link is http://www.virtualhomeschoolgroup.com/. It will give you an idea of what it can do. If it looks interesting then do an internet search on the word Moodle. There are many free Moodle teacher training resources out there including a very busy forum at Moodle itself.
