Im helping a 1st grader and a 2nd grader with their summer packets, but the 1st grader struggles some with the questions and thne he begins to become frustrated and then quits trying. He acts more like the older brother a lot, so i thought that information could help a little. And the 2nd grader is ok but he gets distracted a lot and always is focusing on tv and/or playing outside. that is why i gave them 30 minutes of recess and thats all he could think of and he got distracted again. so I need help. The boys are into construction building and trucks and automobiles, fourwheelers, dirtbikes, bulldozers, and etc. what can I do to fix the 1st graders determination and the second graders lack of focus. signed The Unexperienced Tutor

  1. Create a chart where you give stars for small successes. Give the 1st grader stars for correct answers and for good attempts. Give the second grader stars for focusing on the tasks at hand. Whenever either of the boys earns a star, accompany the star with praise. Set a goal. For instance, after ten stars, give a small prize. It could be a small car, a super hero sticker, or something else to interest boys of their age. Make sure you don't make either of them stay with a single task or assignment for more than about 30 minutes at a time. Between tasks, let them stretch, do jumping jacks, or something else physical. Boys need to move while they learn. In fact, if they are more comfortable standing at a table or kneeling while they work, that's okay as long as the work gets done.

    Good luck!

  3. Short little sessions, 10-20 minutes with breaks. Make the learning fun, change it into a game. Turn off the TV. Let them "earn" time outside by getting their work done. They are not developmentally ready for long periods of study. Get some help with resources at the library or online. Good luck!

  4. Allison,

Working with younger children can be a challenge. Have you tried making school work a fun or rewarding time. Try making a game out of their school work. Get some work sheets on line to go with their packets. If, they get their school work done have a point system. At the end of the week offer a prize for their points. Example: Take them out for ice cream, McDonalds, fun park, etc. Be creative and have fun.  Children their age usually have an attention span of about 15 mins. Try to keep their learning time for each subject to about 15 mins.  You need to firm too, if they do not get their work done limit what they can do. Like no TV or game time. Do not give in or they will be in charge of you in stead of you being in charge of them.   If only one of them gets their school done still reward the one that gets done. The other will learn fast on how to get his reward. Happy schooling. If can be of any further help to you please contact me through my web page. Hope I have been of some help to you.
