Question:

Tutoring the mentally disabled/handicapped?

So I'm going to be a tutor for the mentally disabled. I'm a little nervous, but I really want to do it during my free periods in school. I think it will be rewarding, but I have never worked with them before. I know they are people too, but is there anything I should know before I start tutoring them. Thanks.

  1. Be patient but don't let them get away with everything, especially if it's considered socially unacceptable or could be dangerous after they graduate (like hugging strangers without asking permission). They are all going to have their own different personalities and you might get assigned one in particular or be expected to handle all of them. Ask the teachers or previous students who have worked with them for advice and pointers BEFORE you start.

  3. They are very challenging to deal with.. if you are not used to them, they can even attack you, bite and hit you. So be prepared and don't get scared. Get enough information from the parents and previous tutors/ caretakers.. you need to know how to handle them... and also other things like their likes/ dislikes... and how to control them during a crisis (e.g. when they cry or get hungry)

  4. I agree with the previous answer.  Also, try to treat them as a peer if they are close to your age.  I know they won't come across as being the same age as you, but if you treat them as a peer, they have a better view of what is socially acceptable.  A lot of time people make concessions for the mentally handicapped. This only stunts their social growth.  Enjoy your time with them too.  You might find that you are receiving much more that you are giving.
