Question:

Tutors or homeschooling?

my parents were thinking of having me homeschooled and honestly we all don't know much about homeschooling or tutors. I guess my questions are, can you get homeschooled by a private tutor 5 days a week for a couple hours? are there any for all subjects? how does this whole thing work?

p.s. i live in texas right now, i'm an 8th grader currently, and we're considering homeschool because of medical conditions.

  1. to answer your last question, most High School homeschooling systems are pretty much independant for example in PennFoster they just sent you textbooks, you read them then do the exams by yourself at your own pace American School is another but it's harder. as for 8th grade though, I forgot, I think Calvert does 8th grade. In Calvert they send you the textbooks and an answer guide for whoever teaches you and you have to have a certan amount of hours to pass onto the next grade, but that shouldn't matter

  2. The answer by English Teacher above is the same in our school district.   People with medical conditions that prevent them from attending school are provided for by the government  to have home bound school.

But...however....why don't you do some investigation into homeschool?   You can set your own course based on your goals and talents.

Homeschooling works for our family.  Our son started homeschooling before he was diagnosed with Chrons and it did not have a factor in our decision to homeschool.  He started homeschooling in the 8th grade and is now in the 10th.   He was in the hospital for 2 weeks before Christmas and was sick for a total of 4 weeks.   There were teachers at the hospital to help the public school students keep up with their work.   It was neat that they were very familiar with homeschooling and knew it was less of a burden for us than the public school students who were missing required school days.

By the way, he is now symptom free.   If we decide to do our total 180 days , not required by homeschool law in our state but has been our self made requirement for past 2 years, we will  "school" through the summer.

My wish for him is to be a life-long learner and not have 'school'  restricted to hours and days.

Edit:  My sentence structure is horrible in this reply and my excuse is that I have not had my coffee but I am going to get it now. (How is that for a run-on sentence?) )smile)

  3. im with no...... (sorry dont remermeber rest of name) calvert is awsome. you can do online homeschool.with a live class, and a teacher.essays, reports, all kinds of stuff. you can have a virtual field trip even

  4. Why not a little of both?  Unless you have absolutely no discipline, you will be able to teach yourself many subjects.  I assume you know how to read and write, you can figure things out on your own.  For the harder subjects, if your parents can't help you I would recommend hiring a tutor.  Starting about sixth grade I basically taught myself everything except math.  I just don't get math so my parents get a tutor and it really helped.

this site explains your legal issues for Texas and homeschooling.....check the pdf file for more info as to what you're required to do.

Homeschooling with tutors or without is fine. My daughters didn't have tutors because of the expense involved but there are very good DVD programs too.

  6. Your school district should provide help if you have a documented medical condition that prevents you from attending school.

However, if you have a medical condition that just makes attending school uncomfortable, then your parents have to foot the bill.

You can get some help from one of the many homeschool associations in your state.

  7. I don't have any advice to you except the library card is your best friend!

I LOVE to read about students who WANT to be homeschools and searching it out!  YOU CAN DO IT!

If you want a more computer based program, Switched-On School house from Alpha nad Omega had a good program, boxed set of 5 subjects and are CD ROMS and even track your GPA for you, issue report cards etc...

again, i can't tell you how happy I am to see you WANTING to be homeschooled, even if it is "Just" for medical reasons.... WOOHOO..

btw.. i hope that you get better!

  8. If you are the person with medical conditions, your school or district may provide a tutor for you through a home and hospital program.

In my district, the h/h teacher receives books and lessons from a regular teacher in your school, visits you 2 or 3 times a week for instruction or just to check your work, then provides a grade to your teachers.

The details may vary, but you are guaranteed a free, appropriate, public education by federal law.  Tell your parents to check it out.
