  1. Good luck. This is the cheapest place I have found on the net:

    http://www.standsandmounts.com/index.asp...

This page shows their stands for TVs bigger than 36 inches. And, the cheapest one is about $150. This place has free shipping and you pay no sales tax, though.

I ordered a couple of Bello stands from them. They came out to about $450, which was less than I could find them anywhere else. They arrived - with free shipping - about 2 days after I ordered them. I highly recommend this place.

  2. You don't need a thing that's officially called a "TV Stand".

I used a simple coffee table that cost me $60 at one point.  Worked just fine.

Just make sure the intended surface is wide and deep enough for the base of the TV, and that the item can support the weight of the TV and whatever else you may want to store there (other equipment, etc.)

Try shopping around at your local furniture stores - and don't be afraid to haggle.  Ikea maybe good too.

  3. Guess what I use?  I have a black tv stand with four shelves that holds my 32" LCD TV with lots of room to spare plus all my game consoles, DVD players, games etc.  It's nothing more than the black plastic snap together shelving that they sell at Lowes and Home Depot and other places for around $30 or less.  It looks sharp and holds everything nicely.  It sets my TV at the perfect height for seeing it in all parts of the room too.  It breaks down to a stack of shelves and tubes that fit easily in the back seat of my car and hardly weighs anything.  Yet it's strong enough that a 150 lb person can stand on one of the shelves with the legs on without breaking them.  Why spend big bucks for shelves made of wood, metal, glass etc?  Some of my friends say they like their enclosed shelving systems better but I don't know why.  My components are easier to get to for hooking and unhooking and dusting than theirs are.  I've also noticed that their components get just as dusty in their "enclosed" entertainment centers as mine do on my shelves.  If the cords bother you, you can wrap them with velcro strips and hide them along the back side of the shelf with tape like I do.
