I have a GE television from the late 90's. I want to hook it up to a philips dvd player. Right now I have the composite cables hooked up. The video input on the dvd player is going to the video output on the tv and the audio cables are connected. I try to switch the signal on the tv, using a univeral remote, pressing the DVD/VCR button. And it never changes. I have tried all the buttons on the remote and gone through the menu looking for a way to change the signal and nothing works. Please tell me how I can make my DVD player work.

  1. Are you sure you stated this right?  You say the output of the TV is going to the input of the DVD.  The output of the DVD should be going to the input of the TV.  To use the audio/video input of the TV, you need to select that as the source on the TV.  There should be a video switch but a universal remote might not work for it.  Do you have the original remote?  If not, look for a manual button on the TV itself.

  2. not too many TVs have out connectors, you might be mistaken on that point. what you need is to connect the DVD out to the TVs AV input.

The DVD or VCR button will not do anything for you, you need to press the TV button on the remote, and then change channels. Hopefully as you go below CH2, it will go to AV inputs and you will see the DVD playback. If the channel changer does not bring up the AV inputs, then you need to find a button on the remote that will (when in the TV mode, do NOT push DVD or VCR on the remote).
