I have been looking at home speaker specs... does the amount of tweeters and woofers matter -- as well as the size of each? Why or why not?

Thanks for the help!

  1. Within the money you are ready to spend, check out various speakers. Hear them individually with some tracks that you know (on your own discs). Don't think of the number of drivers but of the sound, clarity, sweetness and detail.

Buy the ones that your ears tell you are the best for you. Don't be misguided by specifications and salesmen.

    "Trust your ears."

  2. well it depends..

    sometimes more isnt better..

in a large room. a floor standing spearker, 1 tweeter, 2 mid and 1 woofer is enough.

    in a medium.. one each

    in a small.. a tweeter and a mid/low..

  3. Go for quality over quantity!!! Start with a couple of Fronts - speaker towers with mids/tweeters & one active subwoofer. Build from there

  4. Hi. Don't be too concerned about the number and size of the drivers in a speaker enclosure. It is the sound they reproduce that is important. Manufacturers have their reasons for using the number and size of the  speakers in their enclosures. Having said that, loudspeakers are the most difficult component of a sound system to buy because they all sound different to one another. They all add their "own sound" (colouration) to the sound they are reproducing. The ideal loudspeaker should reproduce the original music exactly as it was performed. But,there is no speaker at the moment that does this 100%.

Of the 400 brands of speakers available, there are only 20 or so really good speaker manufacturers. There are two things that all good speakers have in common. One is a SEAMLESS SOUND from the very low bass to the very highest highs (you don't hear the individual speakers ).The other is the ability to REPRODUCE VOICES WELL.All good speakers do these two things.

Other things to listen to when deciding to buy speakers are:

CORRECT TONAL BALANCE -   Music is reproduced without any over or under emphasis of the speaker's frequency range-these are sometimes referred as to as "neutral" speakers.

IMAGING - Is the ability of a speaker to recreate the positions and "feel" of the instruments in three dimensional space.

CLARITY - Refers to the ability of a speaker to preserve subtle musical details.

    .

DYNAMIC RANGE - Is the difference between the softest and loudest sounds that can be reproduced by the speaker without significant distortion.

BASS RESPONSE - A speaker that has good bass response will be able to properly reproduce the very low frequencies in music. the powerful low frequencies provide a musical foundation that greatly contributes to the realism and emotional impact of the music. The bass should be solid, full, and clean sounding. Many speakers have a muddy, tubby, mushy,  and boomy bass that should be ovoided.

Now after saying all that ,hopefully you have enough ammunition to go speaker hunting and find the ones that sound right for you !
