Twenty20 format to be expanded: ICC– Cricket News update
The International Cricket Council has lent strong support to the expansion of the game’s shortest format, Twenty20 cricket. Amongst other significant decisions made in ICC’s Chief Executives’ meeting it was decided that the national teams would be allowed
to play 15 matches every year instead of the earlier cap of 12.
The decision is an attempt to further encourage the promotion of the new version which gained popularity due to its time saving nature and entertainment values. As the format requires a different approach and mindset, players and fans both have cherished
its advent at the international level.
According to the ICC, its focus is going to be on the promotion of all three formats of the game without discrimination. “It was an important discussion and the CEC agreed that further conversations to strategically manage T20 cricket and also to promote
all three formats would be beneficial,” said a statement from the ICC Chief Executives’ committee meeting.
In another important decision, the ICC’s CEC decided to increase the number of participating teams in the 2014 Twenty 20 World Cup up to 16, as opposed to the 12 witnessed in the previous competitions, further encouraging the adoption of T20 cricket in
developing regions.
”The Associate and Affiliate countries should consider submitting a detailed proposition to host a future ICC World Twenty20 event in a developing country or region,” the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 further added.
The ICC’s plan to host a future Twenty20 World Cup in a developing region will provide the relatively unknown sides with a stage to showcase their talent and receive international support to improve their social and economic conditions.
Initially it was feared that the introduction of Twenty20 cricket would hasten the demise of the ageing Test format alongside denting the 50-over game’s popularity. However, over time, many have come to see the benefits of the shortest format, especially
the diversification it has brought and the new avenues it has opened for youngsters and veterans alike.
Apart from its overall entertainment value, the T20 format has come a long way from just being a preliminary fixture to kick off the 50-over and Test legs of a tour, especially since major teams like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c749 have appointed specialist skippers
for their T20 squads.
