This is how it goes:

Consider direct (letting the narrator describe a character's physical, mental, and emotional attributes) and indirect methods ( letting the charcters thoughts, words, and ations "speak for themselves").

  1. The author also gives reference to several other literary characters which indirectly adds to our opinion of the protagonist and the antagonist.  Such as the reference to Romeo and Juliet (ill fated, star crossed lovers) and Wuthering Heights- Catherine and Heathcliff

  2. This means explain how the author writes about the main characters, protagonist being the "good guy" and antagonist being the "bad guy" or opposing force. Does the author say something direct, such as "The girl was pretty and smart." or Indirect, like does the author say things more like "The girl said something very witty and walked gracefully out of the room." So, just say how the main characters are being described by the author.

(I've never read those books, but I understand the question so I hope this helps.)
