why did james just bite bella, and not kill her?

i mean, why didn't he suck her blood and stuff? why did he just bite her that was going to turn her into a vampire?

he's a vampire. he's attracted to blood. he likes bella's blood. but edward didn't want bella to be a vampire. so he sucks the venom out. (?)

That and the fact that if she died, there wouldn't be a chance for another book in the series. [This is the actual reason.]
