Question:

Twin Tips vs Carvers.....?

I have been skiing for 7 years maybe.... pretty decent at it, black runs and all that jazz. I am getting a little bored with my carvers and feel the need for a different ski with more capability. What are the differences between the two, is one easier to ski on normal runs with than the other?

Thanks in advance....

  1. Carving skis will hold an edge better in hard snow, and they are usually stiffer and more stable.  For "normal" runs, carving skis would probably be the better choice.  Twin tips usually have very little sidecut and are extremely soft, so you won't have nearly as much edge grip on hard snow.  They are good in powder, bumps (the narrower ones at least), and parks.  I personally prefer carving skis because twin tips are pathetically soft and flop around whenever the snow gets hard.  If you do a lot of park skiing, bumps, and powder, though, that same softness will give them more float and make them more forginving on bumps and landings.

  2. Twin tips make it easier to go backwards.

  3. There is actually a huge difference between the two. Twin tips have a wider sidecut, making it easier to turn, and the tips make it easier to go faster. Regular very shaped skis are great for carving. If you are going to ski the bumps, powder, and park, I suggest you buy twin tips. (Another differnce is that you have to buy twin tips in shorter lengths.)

    Hope this helps.

  4. the one purpose of twin tips is to allow you to ski backwards, whether this is the right ski for you depends on what you want them to do.

In the 70's the same type of ski was called an acrobat.  Ballet style was very popular, the aerobatics were just developing into the freestyle skiing of today.

As to whether one ski will turn easier than the other, a great deal depends on how the ski is tuned. Too little base bevel on the front will make it difficult to ski with precision and little effort, if the midpoint is too beveled, it will be difficult to hold an edge, yet very easy to turn.

            hope this helps.

  5. you should defonatly get twin tips because they ski down the hill just as good as normal skis and they will help so so much in the park you wont be able to believe it and even if you dont ski in the park im sure you will want to ski backwars for fun some time and they wont hold you back at all on the normal hills
