Twirling Candy targeting the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Churchill Downs in the Breeders’ Cup
The 4-year-old John Sadler trained colt, Twirling Candy will be making his next start in the Grade 1, $ 1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Churchill Downs on 5 November, 2011, and trainer John Sadler is convinced that the Mile is the best spot for Twirling
Candy right now.
Sadler also mentioned the fact that there is a “10 percent” chance that he will go for the Breeders’ Cup Classic the same day, but it’s highly unlikely because all will depend on how he comes out of the Dirt Mile.
The son of Candy Ride, out of House of Danzing by Chester House, Twirling Candy has been out of action for the past two months, he last ran in the Grade 1 $ 1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar over a distance of 1 ¼ miles, where he finished second behind
Acclamation.
Twirling Candy ran an amazing race, and he barely got beat finishing by a head to Acclamation. Though, Twirling Candy has shown immense spirit and stamina throughout the season with two graded stakes wins over at 1 1/8 miles.
He started off the season with a win in the Grade 2 Strub Stakes at Santa Anita, where he defeated Tweebster and Make Music for Me under his usual jockey Joel Rosario on 5 February, 2011, on dirt.
Prior to the Strub Stakes, Twirling Candy won a seven furlong dash also at Santa Anita Park in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes last December defeating two ominous rivals Smiling Tiger and Todd Pletcher trainer Caracortado, with the winning time of 1 minute and
19.70 seconds.
Owned by the partnership of breeder Jenny Craig, Marty Wygod, and William Farish, Twirling Candy won his second race of the season over the same distance of 1 1/8 miles at Hollywood Park when he won the Grade California Stakes over Poly Track.
On 4 June, 2011, Twirling Candy took care of Setsuko and Aggie Engineer with the winning time of 1 minute and 50 seconds flat.
Twirling Candy has had three workouts since returning to serious training in September, including a five furlongs work in 59.80 seconds on 9 October.
