Twirling Candy works a mile in preparation for the Grade Pacific Classic for Del Mar
With two grade 2 wins this year, Twirling Candy is expected to be among the leading choices to win the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar over the main track on 28 August, 2011.
Trained by John W. Sadler for owners Jenny Craig and Marty Wygod, the 4-year-old colt Twirling Candy turned in a super work out session for his connections when he worked one mile in 1 minute and 37.80 seconds, while owners watching over from the grandstand
box.
The training session was conducted on the morning of 21 August under usual jockey Joel Rosario, who exercised the colt at Del Mar.
The son of Candy Ride out of House of Danzing by Chester House, Twirling Candy, has had an impressive 2011 season with 2 wins from 4 starts, and the colt is coming off a close third place finish to First Dude, who is now retired due to a tendon injury.
It was the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup at Hollywood Park, run over a distance of 1 ¼ miles on synthetic surface.
On 9 July, 2011, under jockey Joel Rosario, he consistently tracked leaders, but led narrowly with 1 ½ furlongs to go.
Twirling Candy ran a good race with lots of pace as he headed sharply in the final 110 yards and, kept on gamely between Game on Dude and First Dude, losing the race to First Dude by an unbelievable ¼ of a length.
Twirling Candy marked the year with a magnificent win in the Grade 2 Strub Stakes over a distance of 1 1/8 miles on dirt. The race was run at Santa Anita on 5 February, 2011, under Joel Rosario, Twirling Candy pushed hard and won in the seven-horse field
by 4 ½ lengths.
Downing opponents like Tweebster and Make Music for Me for trainer John Sadler, who would want his colt to repeat this year’s winning performances in the Pacific Classic.
Twirling Candy galloped 1 1/8 mile in approximately 1 minute and 50 seconds during his work out at Del Mar and he looked smooth and comfortable, which is a good sign ahead of the race.
