David Jaffe believes that consoles should focus on the experience and not the technical specifications of the next-gen consoles that will hold the God of War developer’s interest.
Everyone in the gaming industry and the community is excited about the next generation of gaming consoles from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. Everyone that is except David Jaffe.
The creator of the God of War series and at the helm of the recently released, Twisted Metal, Jaffe is a no holds barred developer, something that is reflected in his work.
What reasons could iconic developer possibly have for harbouring such feelings of one of the most outspoken developers in the industry? Well it turns out that he wants a platform that changes the game experience instead of simply adding more in terms of
memory and power.
“I couldn’t care less about next-gen. I started at Sony Imagesoft doing Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis games, and I went through that to PS1, then PS2, PS3, Vita...You go through the cycle enough and you realise today’s ‘Oh my ******* God’ is tomorrow’s
‘Ehh, whatever’.
With that mini-reflective rant over with, Jaffe got more specific as to what those experiences he was looking for were. He elaborated, “Ultimately, this is all going to be yesterday’s news and it’s about the experience, the game.”
“Unless we’re talking about holodecks, or AI that’s so amazing it can actually write a compelling story around you procedurally based on your choices, I’m not interested.”
While many would be happy with better graphics and more memory in the next generation of home consoles, Jaffe on the other hand, pointed out the downside of things that would make gamers go ‘oh, so shiny!’.
“I’m no longer that excited about next-gen technology; it means budgets go up. It sucks.”
His vision for future consoles would be ones that can emulate what the PSP and Nintendo 3DS do, in terms on going into ‘sleep’ mode and the player can jump right back into the action without having to “go through all the boot-up s***.”
It is highly unlikely that the next generation of consoles will have the features and capabilities that are on Jaffe’s wish list, but with E3 a few months away, you cannot be too sure of anything.
