Twitter wars: Rory McIlroy thrashes Jay Townsend for insulting his caddie
US Open winner Rory McIlroy, not for the first time in his career, shocked the crowd yet again, but this time not because of his scores. Instead, the newly crowned major champion insulted American media pundit and former European Tour professional Jay Townsend
on Twitter.
The 22-year-old lost his temper after reading what Townsend wrote about his caddie, J.P. Fitzgerald, on Thursday night.
Townsend twitted, “It was some of the worst course management I have ever seen beyond Under 10 boys' golf competition.”
This statement enraged the player and he decided to stand up for his caddie. Using Twitter as the medium for the cold war, McIlroy replied, “Shut up ... you're a commentator and a failed golfer, your opinion means nothing!”
This prompted Townsend to say, “Sorry, but I stand by my comments,” to which McIlroy once again replied, “Well, I stand by my caddie.”
McIlroy hired Fitzgerald in 2008 and after acknowledging his role in his win at the US Open, the player decided to tell the world that no one could point his or her fingers at his caddie.
According to McIlroy, “He's been having a go every now and again since JP and I started working together in mid-2008 and this was the first time I've responded.”
The worst scenario came out later, when Townsend advised McIlroy to hire Steve Williams as his caddie since the New Zealander was free after Tiger Woods dumped him a week ago.
McIlroy has not thought of a response for this remark, but he is aware that he’ll have to face a huge fine by the European Tour for expressing disparaging remarks about another professional or any other employee. Since Townsend works for European Tour Productions,
therefore, McIlroy has officially stamped himself as the culprit.
However, this is not the first time that the player has fired such harsh comments for someone. The player has openly criticized players in the past, and only just recently rendered Royal St. George’s as a course he wouldn’t like to play on.
