Two Friends One Team: Peter Kennaugh and Mark Cavendish to ride for Team Sky in 2012
All the professional teams are busy in completing their roster for 2012, as the current season is approaching its end. The most exciting transfer of the current season was of the World Champion, Mark Cavendish, as Team Sky Procycling signed the cyclist.
Cavendish decided to join the British team after months of speculations as he was in high demand since his victory at the UCI World Road Race Championships 2011.
It was announced today that Peter Kennaugh will be supporting Mark Cavendish for the coming season. Team Sky has renewed the contract of the cyclist for the third consecutive year.
Kennaugh turned professional in 2010 and joined Team Sky as his first professional team. He was elected as ‘the most talented youngster to roll off the Isle of Man production line since his friend and star sprinter Mark Cavendish’ by a renowned magazine,
Cycling Weekly.
The 22-year-old raced at his first Giro d’ Italia this year and finished the race at 86th position.
Kennaugh was keen to make an appearance at the French Grand Tour but failed to impress the selectors despite his impressive third place finish at the Route du Sud 2011.
Kennaugh finished third behind his team mates, Geraint Thomas and Bradley Wiggins, at the National Road Race Championships 2011.
The cyclist commented on his time spent with Team Sky, "The first year was quite hard and a bit of a shock. You find yourself doing a lot more teamwork rather than going for results yourself".
Peter was more comfortable during his second year with the British squad. He further commented on the 2011 season with Sky, "So far, so good this year. I've really enjoyed it this year, the team's running a lot more smoothly".
Team Sky made an announcement that Ben Swift and Ian Stannard will also remain in the side for the third successive season.
David Brailsford has undoubtedly made the most intelligent recruiting for the coming season for Team Sky.
The team now has the top cyclists including Richie Porte, Mark Cavendish, Geraint Thomas and Sergio Luis Henao. There are still few positions left in the team and it will be interesting to see who makes their way into one of the strongest teams for 2012.
Mark Cavendish and Peter Kennaugh will ride together in the coming season. Already there is a great deal of excitement prevailing, as everyone looks forward to a promising season for Team Sky.
