  1. General rule of thumb for adding fish to a tank is that for every inch the fish grows, it should have two gallons to swim in.

For your fishes health, I would recommend either buying a larger tank or sticking to just the one you have now.

  2. You shouldn't put any more fish in a tank that small. Many fish will do what is necessary to survive. Guppies can survive up to 5 years in the best conditions, the tank was probably too small for them to live that long.

Maybe you can get an aquatic african dwarf frog. They don't tend to eat fish, just worms and they mostly hang out on the water's surface. Another animal could be a snail, but be careful because some fish can eat them and some snails will reproduce to the point where your tank will be infested.

However having more life in your tank might still stress out your fish because their health more to do with water chemistry and toxins which all fish release in their p**p. It can also accumulate from uneaten food.

The best thing to do if you want more fish who are healthy would be to buy at least a 10 gallon tank and keep the 2 gallon for water changes.

10 gallon tanks can go for about $25 at petsmart for a starter kit which includes a lot of things you need. You would have to go to the store because they don't have it online.

You'll actually find its easier to maintain than a smaller tank because there is more volume of water to dirt ratio.

Good luck and I hope you find what you're looking for.

  3. Well if you have a good filter and do weekley 25% water changes in the tank, don't listen to others and get a Betta, it's fine, don't worry about "Over populating" your tank, the Betta is an anabantid which means it can pull oxygen from the same air we breath... but don't add another fish if you don't have a filter!... Good Luck and Hope this helps!

  4. well you will probably hear SO many people stating that putting a betta in 2 gallons is cruel and everything...but i guess people have no idea where they come from and the fact that there is a massive drought in that climate every year in which bettas will live in very tiny puddles that are a million times dirtier then any fish tank you could imagine...

anyway...you can definitely with no questions ask put a betta in with your otocinclus...i am fully aware of the 1 inch of fish per gallon but that really doesn't matter with an oto...they aren't dirty at all...

if i were you i would listen to people like erin because she seems to be right about alot of things..

  5. Well I am not going to suggest any fish, your Oto is probably larger than 2 inch which means you tank is already at it's max load.

  6. 1. If your oto doesn't have algae give it algae wafers.

    2. YOu could get  a guppy.

    3. You could get some ghost shrimp.

    4. YOu are supposed to use the whole tank. Since otos are bottom guppies would be fine.

    5. Make sure you have a filter.

    Hope I helped

  7. take the otos out, put a betta in (even though it really is too small for a betta as well), presuming it's filtered/heated/cycled.

2 gallons is too small for otos. they need 10-15 gallons minimum. their small size shouldn't fool you, when these fish are startled they crash around and can easily do damage to themselves in the tiny confines of a 2 gallon, not to mention that otocinclus are wild caught and therefore take a while to wean on to other foods, some don't wean on to anything but soft algae full stop, if there's no, or little, soft algae in that tank (bearing in mind otos don't eat all types of algae) they'll starve and die. they're also very sensitive to water quality issues, being messy fish, pretty much pooping nonstop, the tiny volume of water of a 2 gallon will turn foul within days and that alone can kill the otos.

maybe ditch fish altogether and look into a shrimp tank? provided you can keep the water healthy enough for shrimp.

  8. not really too much you can put in there to begin with.

A 2 gallon tank has a ton of limits.

Oto's are small, cute and don't take up much room, but they might be a little too fragile for such a small environment. (smaller the environment the more likely that there are water parameter fluctuation)

If you really want to keep the Oto, why not add a second one in there to keep him company.

Otherwise I'd look to put something like 2 white clouds or a single betta. instead.

Good luck with your little 2g

  9. you could make a ghost shrimp tank and have 5-10 babies comfortably or 3 adults

  10. NONE thats a cruel tank size i wouldnt put anything but a betta in anything smaller then 5 gallons

  11. if you can't go bigger then the otto, which grows to about 2", is all your tank can probably handle. everything else is gonna get too big to be happy in a two gal.
