I would like to teach at a community college. I just got my M.A. in history. I am also interested in possibly teaching English. If I do pursue an M.A. in english will that increase my chances of landing teaching jobs as I will be able to teach in both fields?

  1. no just your MA in history should do it. Not many schools need you to teach both. It wouldn't hurt you could teach both but they want you really good at one or the other. The problem you run into is they want adjuc facility so they don't have to give you benifits.

  2. I don't think it will increase your chances much, if any.  You might want to consider the negative aspect of holding 2 MAs:  looking indecisive and unsure of which area really holds your interest.  I don't think a department head will really value your other degree all that much; s/he'll be most interested in the degree that you hold within their field.

(Also, many CC professors have doctorates.)

    Just some things to consider.

  3. i guess so...

  4. Why don't you just pursue your PhD?  That would probably allow you to get a job with tenure at both the community college and 4-year college levels.  It will probably take you about the same amount of time and money.  Go for the terminal degree.
