Two Riddles:?

1) So you have a boat on the water, and a piece of granite, or marble, or stone, or some other type of common rock is placed in the boat. The rock isn't heavy enough to sink the boat, but it will cause the boat to displace water. Now the question is: does the rock displace more water in the boat, or does it displace more water if it was placed in the water, without a boat?

2) Ice cubes (frozen water) are placed in a container of water so that they float on the water, and do not rest on the bottom. When they melt (assume they will), will they raise the water level, lower the water level, or will the water level remain the same?

  1. If the rock was shaped perfectly that it, when put into the water lay perfectly at the surface of the water and didn't sink than the displacement would be the same as the rock in the boat. But that would be impossible to accomplish as the rock would still have to be a little above the  water. As long as some of the rock is above the water it has not maximized the water displacement. When the rock is in the boat, the full weight of the rock manages to fully displace without the boat sinking,  so the answer is the boat.

Ice has a little more volume than water, that is why it floats. As it melts it looses some of its volume. When that happens the liquid level goes down. So the level of the water rises when the ice is first put into the glass but then lowers as the ice melts. Because the space the water occupies is less in liquid phase then in solid phase.

This is very evident going the opposite direction put a glass of water in the freezer. Let it freeze, there is an excellent chance the expansion will break the glass.

  2. The rock will displace more water in the boat.

The water level will lower.(Remember ice sets out when frozen.)

  3. the rock will displace more water the ice cubes will not

  4. The rock will Displace more in the boat

The water level will remain the same

  5. 1) The rock doesn't displace any water in the boat, because its not in the water. But it causes the boat to displace more water then the rock would if the rock were placed in the water, because water displacement is effected more by surface arena then weight.

    2) The cubes will have risen the water above the initial condition (before cubes) but it will be below the level that it was at when the water was ice. Because ice expands when it freeze so it displaces more water which is why it floats.

  6. 1 more water in boat since you are combining the weight of both.

2 depends did the ice go in first and then the water of did the water and then the ice?
