Question:

Two Way Turn Lane Confusion?

by  |  earlier

So I almost got into an accident today, I am a new driver and I seem to be having trouble with the two way turn lanes. I was going down the street and discovered I needed to get to the Dairy Queen on the other side of the road. As I entered the two way turn lane another driver entered it coming in face on trying to make a turn to the gas station across the street from the turn lane. Did I enter too early or what am I doing wrong. I need advice because I am confused as h**l!!!

  1. I did not read what you had to say because its just to long. But remember, ALWAYS wear your seatbelt!

  2. doesn't sound like you did anything wrong. it was just bad timing that you both wanted the turn lane at the same time. from now on, just consider approaching a store from the other direction so that you can only turn right from the right lane into the store. it's much safer that way. sometimes if the traffic is heavy, getting turned around is better to avoid an accident.

  3. It's safest to say that you shouldn't enter the turning lane until you really have too. Slow down in the normal driving lane, turn on your turning signal and then pull in to the turning lane just soon enough to get your car out of traffic. Of course you always have to be aware of traffic coming from the other direction but your turn signal will help them know what your planning to do as well. Safe driving!

  4. you both can wait in that lane

  5. You entered way  to early and you need to look and understand what you are doing and at the same time watch the other drivers as well.

  6. NO , you (and the other driver) DID NOT do the wrong thing.

it was simply that the both of you were exercing the same manouvre at the same time.

this situation = the 2 of you should then apply the Courtesy rule and some common-sense.

= both stop and use sign language to indicate to the other where it is exactly that you want to go , there-by establishing who is the closest to their destination and then the allowance for 1 of you to "yield the Right-of-way".

this means that 1 of you needs to say:

it`s okay , you go first.

this will then clear the 2-way and both of you can proceed , SAFELY.   (better to get there 3 seconds late than have to pay a Tow-truck)

    don`t be the 1 who says "i`m going first , mate" , that`s road-rage and very dis-courteous.

have fun learning this , it takes time , especially if the other driver is im-patient (and there`s lots of those out there)  :>)

  7. So stop, be nice, and gesture the other guy to go first.

It's just luck you both are trying to turn within a few yards of each other.
