Question:

Two adult male cats. How to get them to get along?

Our cat is almost 4 years old and we just got another cat because my grandma died. The new cat is only about a year and a half old, but he is bigger than our cat. We let them see each other when the new one was in the carrier still and the old one hissed at him and growled at him. We let the new cat out to see how they interacted and they kept their distance but our other cat continued to growl and hiss constantly. We saw something that said to keep them separated and switch their positions regularly to get them used to the other's scent. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get them to get along quicker? The new cat does not like being stuck in one room and cries for hours at a time when he is stuck in a room, and the other cat is vicious and is mean to the new cat when he is out. What should I do? And if I am doing everything right, when/how should we reintroduce them? HELP!

  1. I have rescued many cats in my life.  The only thing you can do is let them establish each others place in their feline society.  There is always a leader and the rest follow.

If these guys aren't neutered I suggest you get them fixed.  This will "calm" them down and they won't be as teritorial.  Time cures everything.  They will adjust on their own time, there is really nothing you can do with the exception of preventing them from hurting each other.

Wait and see in a few months they will be the best of buddies.

  2. Look at a product called Feliway or Comfort Zone.  Also put a drop of vanilla behind each cats ears.  Keep in separate rooms and let the meet under the door at their own pace.

  3. have them both fixed--that will mellow them out

  4. Put socks over their heads and watch the magic work!

  5. Just give them time.

Theyre young, so its going to take a while.

If they fight, put one in one room, and the other in another room.

But eventually they will be fine with each other.
