Question:

Two different floor types in one room - help!?

I have a long galley kitchen and one half of the floor is floorboards, but the other half is cement. (I'm presuming there was an extension to the property at some time during its long history). At the moment we have a lino floor covering, but this looks awful because the floor is not even.

I have suggested varnishing the floorboards and tiling the cement in a similar colour, but my husband vetoed this idea.

How do we get around this problem of two different floors?

Any suggestions, experts out there?!

  1. Cover the whole floor area with 4mm plywood.

  2. I have this in my house. Just use plywood 9mm if the floor is uneven (I used 6mm) :  nail or s***w it on the timbers, glue it with grip fill (I also screwed and plugged, but you need to be careful you don't penetrate any dpm - so don't go more than an inch. Then lay tiles, or vinyl again, or lookie-likie vinyl planking for a practical finish.

I have seen the levelling screed used on timber in the past, although you may need to caulk the joints if they are very open.

  3. I would add a new subfloor over the existing floorboards and concrete to bring everything up to the same level with the same subfloor material. Then you can finish off the area how ever you want (vinyl, tile, wood, etc).

  4. leave the floor as is float floor leveler over it and then lay your vinyl that you want. It will make it even so you can lay tile. Or place cement board on the floor and lay tile over that which would make it even also. Floor leveler does wonders and you can buy it by the bag from home depot

  5. Put a floating timber floor over the existing mess.  Polishing the concrete and sealing it is also a really great and economical look
